Company shatters break-in efforts
Homeowners and business owners | who want to keep vandals, burglars and wayward baseballs at bay might well be able to sleep a little more peacefully thanks to firms like ACE/Security Laminates™.
The Charters Settlement dealership of the Ottawa-based firm showcased its product in a display at the Regent Mall in Fredericton this week.
Ted Craig, president of the local dealership, presented a window to which a security laminate had been applied and which was then struck with a baseball bat.
The window shattered but was not penetrated, Craig said
The security laminate or film can be applied to any quarter-inch glass window, typical of those used in most residential and commercial settings, Craig said. The laminate is adherede to the inward-facing side of the glass, and provides a high level of security from break and enters or smash and grabs, he said.
"The glass will shatter but penetration of the glass and laminate is strongly limited," he said.
ACE's products are geared toward residential, commercial and governmental settings, Craig said. Laminates in the 100 Series are designed for french windows and school windows, he said The 200 Series provides standard security for houses, he said, while the 300 Series is suited for embassies, government buildings, and airports.
Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, Craig said, several major U.S. companies have purchased the product.
"It's the only security film that's met with U.S. military standards."
Craig said he has to make people realize the laminates are easy to install and affordable.
Often people think they have to replace their glass to use the laminates, he said, but that's not the case. The glass just has to be in relatively good shape and a quarter-inch thick he said.
On the average home, all expenses included, the product costs less than two years of residential insurance, he said.
"You don't really have to do the whole house," he said.
Only the basement windows, patio doors, and any windows associated with the doors would require the laminates, he said.
All laminates screen out ultraviolet rays, which often fade furniture and floors, and there are also a variety of other options for solar protection, he said.
All have a lifetime warrantee, providing the product is not misused, he said. Craig said he is confident he can handle any contract work, based on the company's strong support network.
"It's a great company to work for because it offers a lot of expertise.
The display will be presented again at the Regent Mall on Saturday. Ballots will be available to win either a grand prize of $500 worth of high-security laminate to be installed at one's residence or business, or a free dinner for two at the Snooty Fox.
ACE/Security Laminates™, which has been operating for 13 years, has dealerships across Canada and worldwide. The dealership in Charters Settlement opened in April.
